Idiopathic Scoliosis, Early Detection, and Non-Surgical, Conservative Management

Uneven shoulders and hips? A prominent hump on the back? Trunk leaning on one side?
These signs can be associated with Scoliosis.

Idiopathic Scoliosis is a condition that presents with a greater than 10 degrees of lateral curvature of the spine and has no specific cause (multi-factorial condition). The rate of progression or worsening of the curve varies from person to person but quite commonly rapid during the growth years (9 to 16 yrs old).

Current management is either a wait-and-see situation for mild to moderate conditions or a surgical referral for moderate to severe ones.

Early detection and non-surgical interventions such as Physiotherapeutic Scoliosis-Specific Exercise (PSSE) and/or bracing can help reduce the risk of progression and may delay or even eliminate the need for surgery.

A comprehensive scoliosis assessment and scoliosis specific management like RIGO, SEAS and Schroth concepts can now be accessed in Active Physio Mackay.
